Hey, friends!  Do you ever get a mental or physical stack of projects that you want to do?  Um, and maybe forget or back-burner them?  That was where this shirt jacket was!  It was abandoned in a shopping bag in our spare bedroom.  Well, since there's no time like the present (in the most literal way), I finally got in the right frame of mind to take it on.

The Challenge
You didn't misread the post heading--we are indeed "chopping!"  You may remember this jacket from when I was debating on what size to buy when I first found it at H&M.  I thought it would be a sneaky way to get a cream denim jacket for a good deal ($35).  At that time, I already knew that I wanted to crop/chop it off into a more traditional jacket length.

The Details
A spot was chosen to avoid the snap and pocket detail for the "chopping."  (I used a rotary cutter, but you could use scissors.) After it was cut, I stitched approx. 1/2" above the cutting line to stop the fraying at that point (this step wasn't necessary).  Pieces of the wide finished hem that were chopped off were trimmed and used to copy the waist fit-tab of actual denim jackets (see below).  The tab doesn't really adjust anything, the button is sewn right down.  When the jacket is washed and put in the dryer, the fringe will "fluff" like you're used to seeing.

Faux Waist Tab

Ya'll know I've been crushing on these booties all season, that's a big reason why this coordinating jacket caught my attention (plus, it'll go with my snakeskin mules!).  Since the jacket is boxy, I knew I wanted a slimmer bottom half and I was in the mood for a skirt--little did I know I was going to do denim on denim.  I seriously considered a camo shirt, but just recently did olive green and white, plus with my hair getting more silvery by the minute, blue won the day.  To give it a springier vibe, my bright scarf and bracelet were added.  I'm wearing fishnet hose for warmth, though, because when I started to get ready to take these photos, I checked the temperature and my exact words were: "Crap-O-La it's 41!!!" (degrees outside)

The Takeaway
You know me, I can never leave well enough alone.  Well, you don't have to either!  If you find a good deal on something that's really, really close to what you'd like to have, ask yourself if there's an easy way to modify it.  This was completed within a 45 min. podcast and I fussed with tabs and buttons.  To just cut it off, would take you about 10 minutes!  For the record, the shirt jacket was perfectly fine "as is," I saw myself getting more use out of it this way. 😉
