How to Wear a Babydoll Top

The Challenge:

How does one successfully add a babydoll style top to her wardrobe?
Recently, while shopping, I came upon this babydoll style top.  (Babydoll meaning shirring right under the bustline.)  This is a style I normally woudn't have picked up, BUT, on the "must-haves" list:  Cotton, wheat-colored, lace, textured fabric, v-neck.  It hit so many points.  When I tried it on, I liked the fit, so decided to bring it home and style it!  One of the "rules" of fashion is wherever the outfit has volume, contrast it with something formfitting.  Since it already had a boho feel, I added slim fit distressed jeans.  To bring in the bottom fullness of the shirt, I added my leopard print cardigan.  I liked the "nude" look of these lace up sandals, but I think dark brown booties would be a nice addition as well.

The Details:

This outfit was calming in neutrals (yes, in my world, leopard is a neutral), but I wanted to add a punch of color--enter Clare V. foldover clutch in red.  Clare V. always seems to have the perfect contemporary classic clutches.

The Takeaway:

Although rules aren't always hard and fast, they're a good place to start.  If a clothing item hits so many of your fashion "must haves" list, give it a chance.  Volume can be controlled with an additional layer.

(Behind the scenes:  This is my first attempt at taking blog photos of myself.  They were done using tripods and either a self-timer on my DSLR or remote with my phone.   There is definitely a learning curve!)
