The Challenge
On the face of it this seemed like a non-challenge.
This project is right up my alley for redesigns. What could be more straight-forward than taking a maxi dress, cutting of the top portion and reconfiguring it into a skirt (for someone who sews)? However, after the deed was done, I wasn't sure if I really liked it or not. I have previously worn this with a teal tank and turquoise cardigan. It was fine, but felt ho-hum. When I decided to style it for this blog post, my fondness for this skirt was very much in question. By swapping out the teal for berry, I couldn't be happier. It is surprising how much I like this look, now.
The Details
I found this dress on clearance at Target. While I'm no longer a spaghetti strap wearer (see "before" photo below), the colored print is in my preferred palette. The skirt line is straight enough more/less and the extra ruffles give it some interest without going over the top. My height threw the proportions off somewhat. I cut off the bodice portion, made a casing and added elastic for the waist. If you're not big on sewing, a top over the dress would be an alternative. The slit was also closed by several inches. A clear hair elastic was twisted around a gathered "tail" at the waist and tucked under, the back was left long. The tunic tank is also from Target, last seen at my What to Wear with a Camo Skirt post. Adding my pale orange handbag and teal cardigan lend a subtle contrast.
The Takeaway
Maybe leaving the intended purchase on the rack is the best option. Otherwise, you may want to try and try again, to get a look you love.

I hear you about that takeaway Kim. Yet, then again, it's the challenge that can make it way more fun to create something that works out of something that doesn't. I always say it's good for the brain...LOL!!

Yes, for sure!
DeleteWell I am impressed with not only your vision but your sewing skills. I can't even sew a button on - really, I am that bad. I love the mustard color of the skirt with the burgundy tank - it's perfect for fall! Looks lovely on you my friend - great job!

Thank you! I hope you do!
DeleteThat necklace is fabulous!! Your skirt reminds me of my jumpsuit! So, of course, you know I love it. Which is odd, because we both know I don’t wear brights very often. But that pattern/color is just all kinds of fun and happy, right? Love it.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Daenel--maybe that's why I liked your jumpsuit so well, too!
DeleteHow lovely, what a great switch! Love the whole colour scheme, I have styled a mustard dress this week, it's a great colour for Autumn/fall. xx Please do join the #chicandstylish #linkup over on my blog now. Jacqui Mummabstylish
