Tips for Putting Together a Boho Look

The Challenge
Playing up Boho, or the collected Bohemian vibe of my wardrobe, was more challenging than I anticipated.
I really wanted to knock this look out of the park, but putting it together took some trial and error.  One of the enjoyable things about styling outfits, is where you think you are going may be very different than where you end up.  Such was the case with this outfit.

The Details
The individual elements, I was pretty sure I had, getting them to flow took some trial and error.  My absolute "musts" starting point was my DIY Distressed Denim Shorts and a bag I found on my latest thrifting trip.  Because of the bag, my bootie sandals became another "must" because of the rich brown colors.  Different tops were then pulled for what I thought might work.  Through some trial and error, this chartreuse top and green tie-front cardigan worked the best.  The fringed necklace was a seamless addition to coordinate with the bag and booties, then the earrings and bracelets fell into place.  Each element has it's own Boho detail.  The most surprising addition might be the cardigan (also found in the same thrifting trip, with no intention to pair with the handbag-ha!).

Looking at each piece, we can see the desired details:

  • The shorts were thrifted as a pair of American Eagle jeans then cutoff and distressed.
  • The handbag is crocheted, so brings in the handmade element.  Thrifted for under $7.
  • Sandals, have a natural suede and cutout look, thrifted.
  • The thrifted (under $5) cardigan with the casual looseness of the tie front (also silk and cotton fabric).
  • Leather bracelet #1 purchased at consignment, leather bracelet #2 handmade from Etsy seller.  Earrings handmade with an organic shape.
  • Necklace a gift to me with faux leather fringe, t-shirt purchased new (on sale) from Anthropologie, raw-edged.

The Takeaway
Taking a look at what gives an article of clothing a particular "feel," in this case Boho = Natural or handmade elements and a looser carefree look, will guide you in putting an outfit together no matter what the genre.  Now, thrifting doesn't have anything to do with this look, but it goes to show you, when you know what to look for, your thrifting trip can be more fruitful.  My observations about the success of this outfit would be that possibly the saturated greens give it a less authentic look, BUT I'm going to counter that by 1) Blaming the handbag! and 2) It gives the outfit a sense of suburban ease 3) Bonus, since so much of it is thrifted it is in the spirit of a Bohemian lifestyle.
