Friday Favorites #66~Christmas in July~Hawaiian Shirt Refashion

As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.  Psalms 103:15-16

Hey, friends!  Welcome for some summer-time fun with Christmas in July & Your Own Twist.  This is a twist and turn story that ends up right here.  Let's track it.  I'm joining Monica and Shelbee next week for their Christmas in July & Your Own Twist link up.

(1) This sewing project hasn't been mentioned at all, because it was so far in advance.  Earlier this year (late last year?) my daughter and I got tickets immediately when they went on sale for the Luke Combs concert near the end of September.  (At this point, I imagine it will be rescheduled.)  I haven't been to a major concert like this is decades, so want to have all the fun I can with it!  One of his top singles not long ago was Beer Never Broke My Heart.  Part of the chorus lyrics:  "Long neck, ice cold beer never broke my heart."  As part of the entire experience, I wanted to make a beer-themed shirt.  (Of course, I did!)  However, I couldn't find any fabric with long neck beer bottles.  BUT, I found this men's Hawaiian-style shirt with them on eBay!

Now, I've worn men's shirts like this before, just "girling them up" with accessories.  This time, I wanted to go further.

(2) Somewhere along the way, I found a video that showed how to turn a men's business shirt into a peasant top.  A peasant top sounded perfect, except there weren't long sleeves to work with.  Boo!

(3) Then, when I was putting together a blog post some time ago, this Free People top showed up in my Shopstyle feed for a widget option.  See.  The.  Sleeves?  Yes, long sleeves could be added to the existing shirt.  BTW, these are called lantern sleeves.  Ha, I seem to be the lantern pants diva, why not lantern sleeves, too?

(4) A complete vision came to life!  The entire project was months in the making, as the shirt was stored, pulled out and put back again till more inspiration struck.  I'm all kinds of crazy about it now.  I had many, many doubts along the way.

[Sewing notes:  The sleeves were trimmed a few inches.  For the lantern portion of the sleeve, 5/8 yd. of floral fabric was purchased and most of it was used.  Instead of using the shirt fabric for the neck binding, as per the video, a bias strip of the floral was used.  The front pocket was also not removed because the prints aligned perfectly.  A traditional cuff was made from the shirt scraps without a pattern, by looking at a shirt in my closet.  The side seems were opened a few inches at the bottom to make a vent.]

(5) Naturally, when I saw Monica and Shelbee's Christmas in July theme, Santas like this popped up in my head.  My refashioned Hawaiian shirt seemed like the perfect Christmas in July & Your Own Twist outfit.  And, here we are!  Can you even?!
